"Evangel" is a good old word which means Good News. Evangel has been largely replaced in English by the word Gospel. To be "evangelical," (a term first used as an insult towards Luther and other reformers) is to be focused on the Gospel, or Good News, that God for the sake of Christ's death and resurrection grants free forgiveness and eternal salvation to all who trust in Christ. Right and wrong, the law of God, love for the neighbor and good works are all important parts of Christian life, but the things we do cannot earn God's favor, for all we do is tainted by sin. Only the Gospel creates faith and grants salvation to sinners, so that's what we focus on. The law of course, is always needed so that we realize our sin and recognize our need for a Savior. But we are in the end evangelical, focused on the Good News of free forgiveness in Christ.
